Frequently Asked Questions About Voting in Pennsylvania
-
To be eligible to vote in Pennsylvania, you must:
Register to vote in Pennsylvania at least 15 days before the election.
Be a United States citizen for at least one month before the election.
Be a resident of Pennsylvania and your election district for at least 30 days before the election.
Be at least 18 years of age on the day of the election.

To vote by mail in Pennsylvania:
ALL registered voters in Pennsylvania can vote by mail by applying for a mail ballot.
The deadline to apply for a mail ballot is one week before Election Day.
Your completed ballot must be received (not postmarked) by the Lancaster County Board of Elections by 8pm on Election Day. You can deliver it by mail or in person.
-
We’re so glad you asked, because this causes a LOT of confusion! The short answer is: maybe!
Important things to note:
If you join the annual mail-in ballot request list, you will NOT automatically receive a mail ballot each year—what you will receive is a mail-in ballot APPLICATION.
You still MUST complete the application every year in order to receive your mail ballot.
If you misplaced the application, simply apply for a mail-in ballot online.
Once you’ve submitted your application to vote by mail, you’ll automatically receive a mail ballot for every election for the rest of the year. Next year, you must apply again to receive a mail ballot.🙃
Example: If you applied to vote by mail in the PRIMARY election in the spring, you will automatically receive a mail-in ballot for the GENERAL election in November of the same year.
-
Is this your first time voting at your polling place?
YES: You must show ID to vote the first time. Here’s a list of the types of ID you can use.
NO: You are NOT required to show ID to vote. But it’s a good idea to bring it just in case; there have been reports of PA poll workers illegally asking for ID anyway.
-
You can still vote! The officials at your polling place should contact the Lancaster County Board of Elections to confirm your registration and whether you are at the correct polling place.
If you’re at the wrong polling place:
If you can, go to your correct polling place and vote there.
If you can’t get to your correct polling place, ask to vote on a provisional ballot.
If they can’t find you in their database but you’re sure you are in the right place:
Ask to vote on a provisional ballot instead—DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT VOTING!
-
What if I need help getting to my polling place?
Apply for a Mail-in Ballot and vote by mail! The deadline to apply for is one week before Election Day and your ballot must be received (not postmarked) by 8pm on Election Day.
Contact the Warwick Democrats and we’ll help you find a ride—no questions asked!
Red Rose Transit Bus Route #10 travels between a limited number of locations in Lititz.
What if I need help voting once I get to my polling place?
You can look up your polling place and check for the ADA accessibility symbol to see if the state considers your polling place to be accessible. Read the accessibility criteria here.
Every polling place in PA must have at least one accessible voting machine.
You have the right to assistance at your polling place if you have a disability, are blind, or require foreign language or literacy assistance. You may bring a person of your choice as that person is NOT a Judge of Elections, your union rep, or your employer. If you need someone to assist you, contact us and we’ll help you find a voting buddy!
If this is your first time voting with assistance, the officials at your polling place will ask you to complete a Declaration of Need of Assistance—you can save time by printing it at home and bringing it with you, but don’t sign it until you get there.
-
Any activity that threatens, harasses, or intimidates voters outside or inside a polling place is illegal. This includes any activity intended to interfere with any voter's right to vote.
Your right to vote can only be challenged by election officials on the basis of identity (meaning they do not believe you are who you say you are) or place of residence. It’s illegal for any state or local official to deny you the right to vote based on race, ethnicity, national origin, or language spoken.
If you have an issue at your polling place, here’s what you can do:
Ask to speak to the Judge of Elections at your polling place and report the issue to them.
If your issue is not immediately resolved by the Judge of Elections at your polling place, report the issue to the Lancaster County Board of Elections using this Online Complaint Form.
If you need urgent help, call the PA Department of State Voter Hotline at 1-877-868-3772.
Report the issue to the PA Attorney General’s Office via email at voting@attorneygeneral.gov.
If you are being denied the right to vote, demand to vote by Provisional Ballot.
